Dental Implants

Implants are the modern and optimum form of replacing lost teeth. Essentially an implant is a titanium metal alloy screw that is inserted into the jawbone, the bone regrows around it and this forms a secure base to which crowns, bridges or denture can be attached.

Implants are generally placed either with local anaesthetic, intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on the quantity to be implanted and also the patient’s preference. The gum is cut open exposing the bone underneath into which a hole is drilled and the implant screwed in, lastly the gum is restitched and then left to heal before the prosthetics are attached.

You are likely to require the rest of the day off after an implant, or possibly a day or two depending on the size and scale of the surgery.

As with any incision in the mouth it is really important to keep the area clean to improve chances of success and prevent infection. Do this with either a mouthwash or salt rinse.
